Hoisin sauce is thick, sweet and mildly spicy, reddish brown sauce made from soybeans (soya beans), vinegar, thickeners, sugar, salt, garlic, and various spices. It’s widely used in Chinese cooking or as a dipping sauce. Caramel colour and Allura red may be added to give the sauce the desired colour. Allura red Ac (E number E129) is a popular food dye used world wide.
Hoisin sauce is sold in bottles or jars and is widely available in supermarkets as well as Asian Food Stores.
What is Hoisin Sauce used for?
It’s used in cooking (stir fries), marinating meats or vegetables or as a dipping sauce (for meat, spareribs, duck, seafood, fish, poultry and vegetables). It can also be used as a sauce for pizza.
Storage of Hoisin Sauce
Once a bottle of hoisin sauce is opened, it should be kept in the fridge where it will keep for several weeks. My bottle does not say how long.
