What is Canned Stewed Tomatoes?

Canned stewed tomatoes, are whole peeled tomatoes or diced peeled tomatoes that have been briefly cooked with spices and seasonings and then canned in tomato juice. After canning, they are sterilized by cooking in a hot oven for 1-2 minutes, like all other canned products.

Whole canned stewed tomatoes are softer than regular whole peeled tomatoes, because the’ve been briefly cooked, before canning.

The basic ingredients are: tomatoes, tomato juice, sugar, salt, citric acid and calcium chloride. Dehydrated vegetables, (onion, celery, green bell peppers) and spices are added for flavour and will vary depending on the brand.
