What are Onion Flakes?

Onion flakes are chopped and dehydrated onion pieces. They are light and crisp and vary in size. They have no nutritional value. (Bulk Barn)

The methods used to dry onions include solar drying, convective air drying, microwave and freeze drying, Infra-red drying, freeze drying, osmotic dehydration, oven (at low setting) or in a dehydrator. The moisture level is reduced from about 86% to about 7% or less.

India is the second largest producer of dehydrated onions in the world. (onion dehydration)

How to Rehydrate Dehydrated Onions

Dehydrated onions can be rehydrated: add 3 parts water to 1 part onion and allow the dehydrated onions to hydrate for about 20 minutes or until fully rehydrated.

Culinary Use of Rehydrated Onions

Dehydrated onions are not an ideal substitute for fresh onions but can be used in any recipe calling for onions. They can be used in cooking (soups sauces, stews, casseroles), in spice rubs, stuffings, as a garnish or in salads. You can also eat them as a snack.

How to Store Rehydrated Onions

Dehydrated onions should be stored in an airtight container, in a cool dry place. If stored under the right conditions, they can last 6-12 months. Please read the label of your product to see how long you can store them.
