Pyrus communis
The Forelle pear is a cultivar of the European pear, Pyrus communis.
Characteristics Small to medium sized and bell-shaped snacking pear with golden yellow skin and freckles (lenticels) that turn bright red during ripening. They are a little larger than Seckel pears.
Flavour: Sweet and fragrant, with a crisp and firm texture.
Culinary use
Great for snacking and lunch boxes, paired with cheese, prosciutto, dried fruits and nuts, figs, dark chocolate and as accompaniment to salads.
Availability: summer through to the following winter.
I don’t think I have ever seen this pear variety. They look beautiful and scrumptious, love the freckles! This would be a huge hit at carpet picnic night, we all LOVE pears!
Oh yes this comes from South Africa. It sure looks very pretty but tastes very sweet too!
