What is Earl Grey Tea?

A black Tea Blend

Coconut Cherry Cake_4857 Earl Grey Tea is a black tea blend with a distinctive citrus flavour and aroma, derived from addition of oil of Bergamot, extracted from the fragrant rind of ‘Bergamot Orange’ (Citrus bergamia).

The name “Earl Grey” as applied to tea is not trademarked and therefore there are numerous tea companies that produce their own ‘versions of Earl Grey Tea” using a wide variety of tea leaves and additives. My favourite brand is Twinnings.

The Earl Grey Tea myfavouritepastime.comEarl Grey tea is used as flavouring for many types of cakes and confectionery, as well as savoury sauces.

  1. No I know why I never liked it! The citrus oil! I love Darjeeling tea, but seldom if ever drink it. I’m budgeting on Bromley’s Estate Tea lately!

  2. It is a lovely blend. My favourite, as well as a tea blend called Constant Comment. When My friend and I went to London to visit the Queen, (she was not entertaining drop ins at that time) we went to a delightful little cafe called Valerie’s and had the best cuppa I’ve ever had and it was a steeped Earl Grey! (I wonder, is this where the novels 50 shades of Grey) got their start)? 😉

    1. The author of 50 shades is British? isn’t it? Thanks for introducing me to Constant Comment. I’ve never heard of it. It sounds a bit like Earl Grey though with some spice added to it. I shall look out for it.
“the Bigelow family are still the only ones who blend this secret recipe of black tea, rind of oranges and sweet spice”.
      Have a lovely day Sandy

      1. I do not know what nationality that author is. I had the books on iBooks but just couldnt get into the first one….not really my favourite type of a read! Hope you enjoy the Constant Comment. Happy days.

        1. I never read the books and never watched the movie….I think I saw her being interviewed on CTV news one morning? or was that the main character in the movie? How have you been Sandy? It’s cold and grey here. No sunshine today. Have a lovely week!

        2. Same here Liz! I’m trying to keep busy so I don’t notice the grey rainy weather. I dream of palm trees and white sandy beaches…however, not this winter. I do tend to read a lot in winter so that helps. I belong to Bookbub and can easily download books, mainly free ones! Enjoy your weekend.

        3. It was so cold and windy in the morning when I went for my daily one hour walk (-2C…brrr!!!) We have been having flurries. Can you imagine? Now there is sunshine right here on my table as I type. Awesome. Two years from today I shall be lying under a coconut tree in the tropics, sipping a drink in a fancy glass and watching people surf and swim. If wishes were horses, I would be on my way tomorrow. Have a great week!
