About

Hello!

Welcome to My Favourite Pastime.

My name is Liz. I am a Mum of four.

I love everything about food: cooking, baking, eating out and travelling, but most of all I love plants. Everything about plants!

I specialized in Plant Systematics. What exactly is plant systematics? In short, it’s the branch of botany that deals with identification, naming, classification and evolution of plants. Cool isn’t it?

Did you realize that most of the ingredients we use in cooking come from plants? Oh yes they do: the root and stem veggies, the cereals and pulses, the spices and condiments, the horticultural crops (all the cool vegetables we grow), the fruits and nuts, and the grapes that make all the lovely red, white and rosé wines and the champagnes!  The list is endless mes amis.

I also enjoy photography and nature (heck that’s where all the cool plants are). I live in Canada.

I love networking with other food-blogs. I also love browsing photography and nature blogs (plants again, ha!) .

The Goal of  this blog is to inspire you and me to bake and cook.

Thank you for visiting my blog! Please come back again!!!

Liz

    1. Thank you so much for nominating me. I have never heard of this award, so I will have to do a mini research just to get to know what it means and why I am nominated. I didn’t get that information from the link, only a list of questions. thank for nominating me and have a wonderful weekend.

      1. You’re welcome! You deserve it! I really like your blog :). And I know about the link, that’s just my article about my own nomination, but yeah I’m sure you’ll find much more info on the Internet ;)! Lots of love xxx

  4. Hi there, Liz! Thanks for liking my 100 Shades of Chocolate Blog! Looks like you have some wonderful recipes here! I look forward to exploring more of your blog. It’s great to meet another “culinary soul sister”! Wink! You have so many recipes that look super yummy! Happy cooking! Hugs, Tinkerbell

    1. Thanks for stopping by in return. You are welcome to explore and bake and cook and re-explore. I see you have more than one blog. I was out at the beach…exploring. Have a wonderful week!

  5. Thanks for stopping by my writing blog! Your blog makes me regret the hot pockets I ate for lunch. I’m pretty sure I couldn’t make any of your recipes very well but I could definitely eat them all. Would you consider mailing me some of your food? I’ll pay shipping.

    1. Hi thanks for stopping by too, I think the pockets must have been tasty because the Middle East has excellent cuisine. You could actually make most of these things here, I focus on simple recipes. I don’t like complicating my life, life is already too complicated. I would consider mailing the food, after you’ve made at least ten recipes, by then, there would be no need to mail anything. Hope to see you again, and thank for the follow!!!

  6. Hey Liz…nice blog you have here. My wife and I have been to Victoria. Canada is a beautiful place. I would love to network with your blog. Thanks for your time and sharing your blog with Us.

    1. Hi again, Randall,
I’m glad to learn that you’ve been to Canada. I live in Ontario, but have some relatives in British Columbia as well. I want to inspire people to cook, so I do step by step presentation (time consuming process but I think well worth the time spent). I have been to fun with food and I shall be making the eggs with Ham for breakfast tomorrow. I loved the little that I saw so I shall be a frequent visitor there. Hope to see you here, many more times. Enjoy the rest of the week!!

      1. I also do hands on step by step and yes it time consuming. But I enjoy it as well. Hope you enjoy The Baked Eggs and Bacon!! 🙂

        1. Oh thanks for checking on the message you left behind, sometimes we wonder around so much we even forget where and when we left messages. I enjoyed looking at your blog, and I shall be a frequent visitor there for sure. Have a great weekend!

  7. Hi Liz, thanks so much for stopping by my blog! I’m really enjoying exploring your blog, i think I might have to try your recipe for Apple Cake – it looks amazing!

    1. Thanks so much for stopping by my blog, and for browsing. The apple cake is one of my favourite cakes. It tastes as good as it looks, we really enjoyed eating it. I learnt a new word today…Matzo. Hope to see you again. Enjoy the rest of your week.

    1. Ha ha this is the funniest and most welcoming statement I have heard since morning. Please don’t stop drooling because I would like you to make some of them too. Thanks so much for stopping by and for making me smile…Have a pleasant day.

  8. Hi Liz, thanks for dropping by my blog, I’ve got a long way to go and I really appreciate the support. If you have any tips for someone just starting their first blog I would love to hear them. All the best Iain…

    1. Hi Lain
I have only been blogging three months so I cannot say am an expert on blogging but I have learnt a few things. I think the utmost thing is the reason why you started your blog. If you can answer that question, then the rest will fall into place. How much time you dedicate to your blog depends on why you are blogging. What do you hope to achieve? if the blogging is just for fun then thats easy because you don’t really need to put too much time into a fun venture. The other thing I have learnt, is blogging does take tons of time off your daily schedule. The last thing is you need to network with other bloggers and that requires time too. Okay I don’t want to publish a book here, you are welcome to ask specific questions but as I mentioned earlier I’m not an expert, I’m still learning every single day. Thank you so much for stopping by and do have a pleasant week!

  9. Dear Liz, thanks for visiting the deerslayer’s wife. I always enjoy finding someone who enjoys cooking and eating as much as I do. Your recipes look wonderful. I’m gonna start with the Lemon Poppy Seed Muffins, then the Apple cake with Apricot glaze, then work through the scones. Today, however, I promised my junior deerslayers that we would make homemade ravioli stuffed with sauteed crimini mushrooms, garlic, spinach, and ricotta. I think we’ll top it with a tomato/ ground venison sauce. Pray for us! I’ll let you know how it turns out.
By the way, your photography is lovely. I just got a new camera and I’m still learning how to use it. Hugs and happy blogging.

    1. Wow I hope you enjoy everything you make from here. Your dinner tonight sounds like what I would read in a high-end restaurant menu..it sounds so delicious. Please let me know how it turned out and also whether the dear deerslayer and the junior deerslayers enjoyed the meal. I love your energy, I can just feel it even though you left this note moments ago. Hope to hear more from you and please enjoy your dinner tonight!!! P/S I just use a simple point and shoot, I will budget for a better one, one of these fine day.

    1. I love networking with others, its the only way you can learn. I’m intrigued and a bit intimidated by your story though. I look forward to learning from you. Cheers!

  10. Thanks so much for stopping by my new blog! I have been scanning your treasure trove of recipes and already excited to try the poppyseed cake, scones, and all those bacon recipes!!!

  14. So you lived in the Netherlands, travelled to Ethiopia and speak a little German – I was already impressed with your food and am now I am with how well travelled you are 🙂

    1. I studied in the Netherlands and also worked with a project based there. I have been to Addis several times for meetings and conferences. Once we had a huge conference and the president came for the opening ceremony. We were all so impressed, we had never had a president attend in other countries. And as I said before Ethiopians are really friendly and welcoming. I have no words to describe them. Thanks again for stopping by.

    2. I don’t seem to be getting more information on this team member award, apart from questions on your blog. What is my obligation and the aim of being in the team etc?? I always want to make informed decisions.

      1. There are no questions, you just need to nominate 14 blogs that you have enjoyed reading and this way the rest of your readers get a chance to appreciate them as well. But don’t forget to display the logo on your blog 🙂

    1. I completely agree with you. I have travelled a lot, and made friends in every country I have been to, and eaten all kinds of foods. It’s so refreshing to meet people, eat things you’ve never had before and most of all just laugh and enjoy life. Thank you for stopping by, your blog is special to me because it reminds me of all the lovely foods I ate in Addis!!! I shall be a frequent visitor there! Wish you a pleasant weekend.

    1. Thanks too, you have a very interesting blog. Full of so many interesting topics. literature used to be my favourite subject in school, then i meandered into sciences and got lost in the big world of plants.
