Chocolate Chip Orange Cake

With Orange Syrup

Chocolate Chip orange Cake myfavouritepastime.comThis is one of the best cakes I’ve eaten since the year begun. Once, ready, the hot cake is drizzled with lots of homemade orange syrup and then set aside to cool, slightlyApparently orange syrup and chocolate really go well together. You can also serve it with some warm custard for dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed eating it and hope you will too!

Chocolate Chip Orange Cake

Preparation time: 30 minutes; Baking time: 40-55 minutes;  Makes: 1 cake

Ingredients

  • 300g (2½ cups, 10.5oz) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda (bicarbonate of soda)
  • 185g ( 6.5 oz, ¾ cup, 1½ stick + 1 tablespoon ) butter
  • Grated rind (zest) of one medium orange
  • 300g (2½ cups, 10.5oz) sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 100g (3.5oz) chocolate chips
  • 180ml (¾ cup) buttermilk

Orange Syrup

  • 120g (½ cup) sugar
  • ¼ cup orange juice

Instructions

  1. Sift or whisk flour and baking soda. Grease a 20cm baba or ring pan. Preheat oven to 320°C (160°C) 10 minutes before baking.
  2. Beat the butter, rind and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, beating well before you add the next one.
  3. Stir in chocolate chips and buttermilk then fold in the flour. Spoon into prepared pan, and bake at 320°C (160°C) for 40-55 minutes or until firm. Stand for 5 minutes then transfer to cooling rack. Brush hot cake with hot orange syrup.
  4. To make orange syrup: combine sugar and orange juice in a small saucepan, stir over heat without boiling until sugar is dissolved, bring to the boil and remove from heat.
  5. Cup measures based on American cup of 240ml

Points to Note

  1. Please note that oven temperatures are given as a guideline only. You may need to add or reduce the suggested temperature depending on your oven. I baked the cake at 320ºF (160ºC), for 45 minutes.
  2. For cup measures, spoon the flour into the cup, heaping it up over the top, then slide a knife across the top to level off the extra. Be careful not to shake or tap the cup to settle down the flour or you will have more than you need.

  1. Greetings Liz, as always I am drooling over the pictures. This happens to be my all-time favorite cake, love the orange flavor in the cakes, but I have not ever used the orange syrup, will try it someday.
    Have a great day ahead.

    1. Hi Ashu,
Sorry I took a bit of time to get to your message. You can try orange syrup because it’s simple to make and the ingredients are only sugar and fresh orange juice. I hope you find time in the near future. Thanks for stopping by.

  2. This caught my eye because I have been working my way through pounds of kumquats. There are not a lot of recipes for them, so I have been looking at the ways others have used citrus in general to see if I could adapt them. I could probably just process some kumquats whole in place of the zest, and I have made some Kumquat Preserves that already have syrup. Thank you so much for this idea- just pinned it!

    1. Hi Sarah
Thanks you so much for pinning! I’ve never used Kumquat but now you’ve raised my curiosity. I shall keep my eyes open to see if I can find some, around here. I hope whole processing works for you. Please give me a feedback if you can. Wish you a pleasant Sunday.

      1. I’ll be lucky to get there with the kids! We are flying separately, josh gets one boys and I get two. We are definitely excited, though I’m discovering how difficult it is to find hotels that will take three children. I prefer the little pensions but it is difficult. We are excited nonetheless, prepping the boys with lots of German food. Language lessons soon.

        1. Oh that sounds too good to be true. I wish you a wonderful trip and a great time eating all that lovely food. Let me see if I can still remember the little German I used to know.
          Ich wünsche dir alles Gute.
Zeitenlang habe ich nicht kein Deutsch gesprochen. Is das richtig?
