What is Bruce Avocado?

These large green avocados are sold in my local store in Canada and are labelled “Bruce Avocado” . I have tried to google Bruce Avocado and nothing ever comes up. I can’t seem to get any more information about them.

What do they look like?

They are 3-4 times larger than the normal Haas Avocados.

Shape: their shape varies depending on the batch being sold. Sometimes they are pear shaped and other times, they are more or less round in shape.

Colour: They are bright to dark green in colour and never become very soft even when ripe.

Taste: they are mild in taste, not too oily and are great for slicing or dicing but not for making a nice mushy guacamole.

Cost: They are quite expensive. They cost $2.99 each and yet I usually buy a bag of 4-5 Haas avocados for the same price when they’re in season.

Source: the last time I bought them it was indicated they were from Dominican Republic, the one I bought today says they are from Brazil and these ones are not pear shaped,

Help: if you know anything about these avocados please join the conversation. Thanks!

  1. No matter what they call them, I LOVE avocados Liz. I’ve not seen Bruce avocados here, so I’ll stick with the Haas or the individually Wholly Guacamole packs I get at Costco. Really do love them and they are very heart healthy.

    1. I am not sure the name ‘Bruce Avocado’ refers to the same avocado variety. After buying them for a while, I realized that they don’t even look the same all the time. I gave up on trying to find out exactly what variety they are. Thanks. I am eating my so called Bruce Avocado for breakfast right now!!!

        1. Ha ha! I eat them for breakfast, smoothie (Hass avocado) and of course salads, especially grain and pulse salads. So good and creamy!!!!

    1. Thank you so much. I am eating the so called ‘Bruce Avocado” right now for breakfast. I will certainly read the article right now!!! Have a great weekend!!!

  2. Hi Liz… Sometimes they are also called Florida Avocados. You cannot make traditional guacamole with these avocados because they are a bit firmer. They are great for salads though because they aren’t as creamy as a haas avocado so they hold their shape better when you chop and dice them.

    1. Thank you so much for letting me know. I highly suspected they are just Florida Avocados. I don’t know why they call them Bruce.

And oh yes, I did realize they are not great for guacamole. So here I am with a plate of nicely sliced Bruce Avocado, with a trickle of lemon, for breakfast! I am so glad that you are still going strong with your blog. Wish you all the best!!!!!
